Overheard vs MacWhisper
MacWhisper is a popular Mac transcription app: drop in any audio or video file, dictate, or record meetings, and it transcribes with Whisper models on your Mac. Overheard does one job — recording and transcribing your calls — and adds what comes after: summaries, action items, a meeting library and an MCP server so Claude can answer questions from every meeting.
you mostly transcribe files — interviews, podcasts, lectures, videos — want subtitles and exports, dictation, many model choices, or an iPhone app too.
you want your calls recorded automatically, a searchable library of meetings with summaries and action items, and Claude Code, Claude Desktop or Codex answering from them.

Where MacWhisper is better
Any file, any format. MacWhisper is built for transcribing recordings of every kind, with subtitle export, batch processing and translation. Overheard can import files, but it treats them as meetings, not as media to subtitle.
More models and more knobs. MacWhisper lets you choose between many local Whisper models and several cloud providers. Overheard offers two engines and keeps the settings short.
Dictation and iPhone. MacWhisper also does dictation and has an iOS and iPad version. Overheard is a Mac menu bar recorder only.
A mature, well-known app. MacWhisper by Good Snooze has been around for years and has a large user base.
Where Overheard is better
Made for meetings, start to finish. Overheard lives in the menu bar, starts when the call starts, records your voice and the other side on separate tracks, and turns each call into a transcript, a summary, decisions and action items you can tick off. Recording a Google Meet call needs no setup.
Your meetings, answerable from Claude. Overheard ships an MCP server and a Claude Code plugin: ask "what did I promise the client last week?" and Claude answers from your transcripts with the minute it was said. Read how it works.
Free, all of it. There's no Pro tier. Summaries use the Claude Code or Codex subscription you already have, or Apple Intelligence on-device.
Plain files. Every meeting is a folder of Markdown and WAV in ~/Meetings, ready for Obsidian, Spotlight or git.
Using both
They don't compete for much. Many people will keep MacWhisper for files and dictation and let Overheard handle calls; both read your Mac's audio, so they run side by side.
